The Father's Photographs - Lincoln Park Zoo

The following pictures were taken in June 1993 at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois. At the time indicated, three elephants resided at the zoo - 18 year old year old Asian elephant Bozie and her three year old daughter Shanti and 15 year old African elephant Binti.

Bozie was transferred to the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri, on a two year breeding loan from 1987 to 1989. Upon successful mating with the zoo's bull Onyx, she returned to Chicago pregnant. Shanti was born the following year in 1990.

In April 1995, Shanti was moved to the Buffalo Zoo in New York. She now plays a large role in the Houston Zoo's elephant breeding program; she gave birth to her third calf in May 2010.

Bozie was relocated to the Baton Rouge Zoo in September 1997, where she resides with another Asian female Judy.

Binti and another African female Keke were moved to the Caldwell Zoo in winter 2000. Binti now resides at the Texas zoo with two other African females and the one of the largest male elephants in the country, Chico.

Thank you for posting this about LPZ's elephants. I wondered how the girls were doing at Caldwell!

  2. Anonymous,
In November 2000, Binti and Keke left the Lincoln Park Zoo after being together for three years, headed for the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler, Texas. They spent another three years together until Keke was transferred to the Dallas Zoo as a companion for their lone elephant, Jenny. Five years later Keke was euthanized for congestive heart failure.

Binti is still with the Caldwell Zoo's group of African elephants. I will post soon some pictures I took of her last winter.

I eagerly anticipate associating with new individuals with an interest or history in elephants, elephant history and elephant record keeping. If you have further information regarding the animals or locations questioned in the article, please leave a comment or message me in an effort to complete their records for elephant historians.
